The HPTIMEOUT variable has the constraints as Francois (sorry keyboard doesn’t French letters right hehehe). You might also want to search the Interweb for Tim Ericson's utilities and scripts... (of Willamette Dental Group Fame!). Tim had a lot of great tricks and things he had written over the decades (YES! DECADES!!!) of HP 3000 work :)

IIRC, there are:

HPTIMEOUT (CI variable, generally not of use in most such cases)

BOUNCER (from Boeing and/or the Interex CSL)

BOUNCE (Allegro's free utility ... which (IIRC) had more features than BOUNCER)

KNOCKOUT (Allegro's product (also available from Lund), which has still more features)

For users of the SIMH 3000 simulator, I have a version of BOUNCE that will run on it :)
