Ed quotes the British heliograph manual:

Thanks Ed Sharpe archivist for SMECC

Please check our web site at
 <A HREF="http://www.smecc.org">http://www.smecc.org</A>
to see other engineering fields, communications and computation stuff we
buy, and by all means when in Arizona drop in and see us.

=======================================

...but, especially as long in you're in Arizona, you should never take a
backseat to the British on anything heliographic. One of the largest and most
successful heliographic systems in the world was established by the 9th
Cavalry in Arizona and New Mexico during the late 1880's. See the second map
in:

     http://www.9thcavalry.com/teleheli.htm

The heliograph was the Cavalry's secret weapon, the one that allowed them to
ride in at full gallop, just in the nick of time, bugles trumpheting and
American flags waving, to rescue the beleaguered settlers.
