My .exrc (on BSD/OS, where I normally use vim or gvim instead of the
built-in vi, but I would expect most of this to be compatible with vi and
ex on MPE) is a text file that has simply:

set ai noaw bf eb noic nolist ruler sw=4 sm wm=0 nows

P.S.  How's that for a typically cryptic unixism?  :)
