Ah, those lovely old firehorses....  One great thing about Philadelphia is
that they always maintained a mounted patrol unit, even with the advent of
autos and bikes.  There were times during the 40s when the call to
*modernize* was especially strident, but there were and I believe still are
so many nice parks in the city and surrounding areas which were not
suitable for motorized patrol that those units survived.  They were one
step ahead when the effectiveness of mounted officers in crowd control was
finally recognized and the mounted policeman was again in favor.

You want to know a way to cement feelings of encroaching age?  Browse an
antique gallery/mall/show... and see the number of items from your youth
that are now sold as collectables/antiques!  Oh, my dear old Mobo-
Bronco!!!!!  I wanted to pretend that I didn't remember mine (but have the
Christmas-morning photo to remind me).
