I just received a call from Nicole Saeger at CSY clearing me to make some
information public regarding the OpenMarket web server beta test on MPE/iX.
As usual, this is preliminary information and should be weighed as such.
 
As you may be aware, we have been running the NCSA httpd 1.3 port practically
from the day it was first ported by Mike Belshe.  Since then I've had a sort
of love/hate relationship with it; it works, but is slow as molasses on a 950
system, and not a lot better on a 960.
 
If you have visited jazz recently, you will notice it is now "Powered by
OpenMarket".  I knew the beta couldn't be too far away.
 
I received the OpenMarket beta by FedEx Tuesday morning.  It took all of 10-15
minutes to install alongside the NCSA server and configure it to use the old
NCSA directories.  It came right up - and it SCREAMS compared to NCSA.  On
some image-intensive pages (over 20 in-line images/icons) over a direct
network connection the OpenMarket server was 10-15x faster than NCSA!  The
assistant director of libraries, who did most of the HTML for their machine,
and I are very happy campers!

Both servers are accessing the same files, same machine, and same priority
jobs.  The NCSA server will remain up over the weekend, then we will be
giving it an extended rest.
