Having worked with Zebra printers a long time ago - we ran into another problem that masked itself as a buffer overrun. The problem we had was that the printer did not have enough memory. We changed some labels to a larger font (so they could be read from further away), and we started having trouble with messed up labels, missed characters, etc. This problem looked to be a communication issue, but turned out to be a severe lack of memory in the printer itself. Upon ordering more memory for the printers - everything worked OK. I do not work with Zebra printers anymore (changed companies), so probably would not be of much help in diagnosing problems.

My experience with Zebras using software-only flow control XON/XOFF over
PVCs or other network emulation of an RS-232 hardwire is that if you still
have buffer overrun conditions, slow down the connection (at least in the
host-to-Zebra direction. This is possible in some PVC implementations). I
have encountered situations where the Zebra's XOFF character does not get
back to the 3000 fast enough to prevent buffer overrun.

I can't remember the model I'm using, it's newer then the 105. It's running
without DTR, just your basic 2,3&7. For flow control it's using xon/xoff.
The other sick and twisted idea I'm playing with is hanging them off of
JetDirect boxes.
