Roger:

A couple of years ago we had a similar problem which caused the standard
gnashing & wailing. Root cause eventually turned out to be a MUX attached to
the 3K which was generating a huge number of I/O's seemingly because the
terminal controller at our remote location (connected to the MUX) had been
accidently disconnected. Powering down the MUX immediately remedied the
situation...
