Dave,
I spent months trying to get TimeFinder woking reliably with an MPE system, 
and finally gave up.  I did manage to figure out the problem you describe, 
however.  The problem stems from the fact that as soon as MPE sees the 
master volume of volume set come online, it attempts to do a VSOPEN, even 
though no VSOPEN command has been issued (very annoying!).  Unfortunately, 
not all volumes are available at the same moment, so the system will attempt 
to open some volumes that are not yet online, and conclude that they are not 
available.  The solution is to split individual BCV's rather than the entire 
set.  If you make sure each of the member volumes is online before making 
the master available, it will be able to find all the volumes during the 
VSOPEN process.  HTH.
