If Samba is already running, EMACS works just great! There are also
"fontification" and "helper" macro and function files for Java, COBOL,
Fortran, C, C++, HMTL, SGML, AWK, TeX, LaTeX, SQL and more (and I hacked
together one for SPL - not perfect, but usable). The fontification
functions automatically change the color of language reserved words,
declarations, comments, quoted strings, etc. The helper files do things
like make sure your begin...end (or { } ) pairs match, perform indentation,
etc. Like vi, EMACS is available for many platforms and just about any
form of UNIX - EMACS is one of those "GNU" packages from FSF (Free Software
Foundation). If you are into Lisp, EMACS is extensible by adding new
functions (written in Lisp). Unfortunately, it is not available for
MPE/iX. The binary for EMACS is available for Windows 95, 98, and NT at
the first site listed below. EMACS versions change almost as fast as
QCTerm versions, so check back every couple of months for newer versions
with even more capabilites.
EMACS is available (free) at:
For Windows 95, 98, and NT (sources and binaries are available):
http://www.cs.washington.edu/homes/voelker/ntemacs.html
For other platforms:
http://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/emacs.html
Manual is at:
http://www.gnu.org/manual/emacs-20.3/emacs.html
Major modes (fontification, helper, and combined files called modes files) at:
http://www.cs.indiana.edu/elisp/major-modes.html
EMACS library:
ftp://ftp.emacs.org/pub/
Most of the time WORDPAD will also work if Samba is running.
