Art,

Methinks that Sony tapes only take the Japanese character set and
probably record in a BETA format (hehehe)

Seriously... it could be the drive and head alignment - or the tape
is physically bad, in which case, I think the term to apply to the
tape is FUBAR (a military term, really!) and pray you have another...
