<can't tell if my first attempt made it through>

Years ago, after I graduated high school, I took a 3 month backpacking trip
through Europe. We used Eurail passes to get everywhere. On the train from
Paris to Nice, after a stop in Avignon, I left the car where I had stowed my
backpack. Upon arrival in Nice, I went back to fetch my backpack (okay, I
was young). As you've probably guessed, it wasn't there. To make a long
story short, it had been stolen, but due to the nature of my clothes (I had
a Wheeler High School windbreaker), and the fact that the thief was not too
bright (he was wearing my windbreaker and green running shoes several hours
later in front of the train station), the police and I were able to retrieve
nearly everything.

As a side note, the coolest part about this is that my compadre on the trip
later became a writer of travel pieces for the Washington Post and has
written a few true-life and travel related books. His latest book retells
the stolen backpack story. A quick search of google.com for "Mike Tidwell
author" shows he's written more than I knew about, and I usually keep an eye
out for his stuff.

Matt
