No question is every silly, unless part of a joke:-)

The answer, as I understand it, is the HOME group password is to keep others
in the same account out of it (so you can set you access to GU only).  Think
of a set of users sharing the same HOME group.  With GU, they can all get to
the files, but only by logging into the HOME group.  Other users of the same
account could only get in if they had the HOME group password.    There was
before access lists were available.
