I'm in the middle of a 3k-to-9k right now.

Simply put, the human factor is quite high.  There is so much extra c@%*
one has to learn for the HP9000.  Things that 3k people have taken for
granted, (such as device configuration) that HP did for us, must be
relearned.

In order to make my life easier, (since I'm a one-man shop right now and
in case I fail.)  Is look for work elsewhere, it helps me keep my sanity.

If I had to make a decision, as far as Human Resource management I would:

1)  Hire two persons to man the HP9000 for every one I used to have on
the HP3000.  This would handle the learning curve as two persons would
complement each other.

2)  Wait until one or both became proficient to the point where one of
them could handle it by themselves at the same level of expertise as they
had on the HP3000.

3)  Then lay-off the other person.  (I know it sounds cruel, but H/R has
a reputation to keep.)

1)  I would hire a contractor for the express purpose of hand-holding the
former HP3000 person until that person became proficient on the HP9000 at
the same speed on the HP3000.  (This is probably the kinder, gentler, way
to perform the job).

1)  If I had no baggage to carry over to the new HP9000 (such as
interdependencies that need to be passed on to the next generation from
former employees), I would lay off the HP3000 person immediately and hire
a proficient HP9000 person.  (This is probably the one most H/R
departments would choose.)

Subject:  Managing HP3000 vs HP9000 (required human resources)

I4m wondering whether there is an interdependancy between used
hardware/operating system and required human capacity for systems
management. In particular I4m interested in migration from HP3000/MPE XL
into HP9000/HP-UX. Is there anyone who has already experienced this
migration and who can tell me whether I need more people/more time to
manage te HP9000?
If there is no interdependancy at all between used hardware and systems
management capacity, I would like to know why not. The main question is:
Which factors do determine the required human capacity, and how can I
measure these factors. I would like to estimate required human resources
before I implement new hardware or software (who doesn4t).
