8224 is the integer value of two spaces.  In other words, if you have a
single integer and it actually contains spaces, it will be read as 8224.
If this is coming from a call to a data base intrinsic, I would suspect
that the first two bytes of the field containing the data base name in
your program have not been replaced by the file number. Verify that
the data base you are trying to access was actually opened.
