Ok, a few more pieces for the Samba puzzle:
1. You CAN run both the 'Client for Microsoft Networks' and the
'Client for NetWare Network' concurrently on a Windows 95 PC
without conflicts and make use of a Samba server. This was
verified this afternoon.
2. Be very careful to either have a working WINS server on the
workgroup your using (and your setup to access it), or place
the 3000's network name and IP address in the LMHOSTS
file on your PC (DOS Error 53 is what you'll get otherwise
from a NET USE or NET VIEW command pointed to the
3000).
3. Even if you use a 'SM' capability user (ex. MANAGER.SYS)
you don't bypass file permissions. You must also specify
the user as an admin user in [global] section of smb.conf
(ex. admin users = manager.sys)
4. The 'preexec' and 'postexec' functions do not appear to
work for all connects and disconnects. They appear to
consistently "NOT" work for connections made from
a DOS or Command window (so much for my simulated
logon/logoff messages :)
5. You must define a user with 'guest' privileges for browsing
to work correctly. There are a lot of little gotcha's here,
and the best thing to do is read the:
'/SAMBA/PUB/docs/BROWSING.txt' file for more detailed
help.
When I find out more, I'll let everyone know. I am working on
a document that I'll place on my web site (not there yet) to
act as a Samba/iX config guide. Hopefully it will be ready
by next week. I'll let everyone know when and where it
can be found.
