The Windows shell keeps track of random information, such as the current
directories/drives, active files, and MRU lists of documents.
Periodically--usually during idle time-- the Shell will scan its lists and
update stuff. (Have you ever seen your desktop disappear and all the icons
redraw themselves?) For some reason, your A: drive is in one of the Shell's
lists, so it gets hit when the Shell does what it does. I see this with my
CD drive occasionally. You might want to check your desktop, Start Menu,
and "Recent Documents" menu (c:\windows\recent) for shortcuts pointing to a
file on the A: drive. Also, you might want to search for "A:" in the
registry by using REGEDIT.EXE's Find feature. The usual disclaimer about
REGEDIT being a big loaded gun definitely applies here!!!
Disclaimer: the above is a hazy recollection of the answer to your problem.
I saw it a couple of years ago in Brian Livingston's "Windows 95 Secrets"
book--or maybe it was one of his articles in InfoWorld.... Anyway, I HIGHLY
recommend that you check this book out. (You might get lucky and find it on
clearance now that it is considered "obsolete"....) I have found this book
to be a _great_ reference to all the arcana of Win95.
hope this helps...
