It appears that the HPCONTINUE variable lets you know if a job will continue
if an error is detected or simply abort. The default for jobs is to abort
unless you place a :CONTINUE statement before the job statement you feel may
cause an error and, if this happens, you don't want the job to abort. You
can also do a :SETVAR HPAUTOCONT TRUE anywhere in the job and the effect is
the same as if you placed :CONTINUE statements before each JCL step. There
may be places in a job where running a program or statement would have
disastrous consequences to your data/data base if a previous step ended in
error; therefore, you would want the job to "crash" before any harm can be
done. You can test the HPCONTINUE variable to determine whether or not your
job is set to abort or keep on going. If it is TRUE and you are at a point
in your job stream where you do not want the job to keep going in case of an
error, you can then :SETVAR HPAUTOCONT FALSE and the job will abort on an
error (I believe that the value of JCW has to be > or = FATAL for the job to
abort).
Hope this helps. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!!
