Doug:

First, the user level is not related to IMAGE/SQL. Systems with
IMAGE/SQL can be purchased with as little as 8 user licenses on up to
unlimited user licenses. The contract rep you mentioned was probably
making a reference to a specific system. That is, some systems started
at a 100 user level and went up from there. For example, in May of 1994,
the lowest level for a Series 957 was 64 users. Oddly enough, the lowest
level for a 947 at that time was 100 users! (gotta love HP marketing.)

Second, the user license refers to logged on sessions. For most systems
that equates to people or seats, but some software does create a session
during its processes.

Third, I'm curious about something. You say that your new system was bid
by a DAR. A DAR (Distributor Authorized Reseller) is part of the
official HP channel program. DARs must have HP certified staff members
and follow strict HP guidelines. While it is not impossible that a DAR
could be quoting you a refurbished system like the 957, it *is*
unlikely. This is because the new systems are cost competitive in your
cpu range and because it is easier for a DAR to sell and implement a new
system. Therefore, I wonder if you are being quoted by a DAR or by
simply a broker?
