We've found that to be true also. We think that the ability to port the
app to a huge number of other platforms is a benefit to the software
vendor, but not particularly a benefit to us, because we aren't
interested in moving the software off the HP3000. Through our maintenance
fees, we pay the research costs for Collier-Jackson to expand their
markets by porting their software to other platforms that we have no
reason for using. Our "reward" is that the software runs slower on our
HP3000. The conclusion that I draw is that if you want to run purchased
software on the HP3000, you're better off with a vendor that concentrates
its efforts on the HP market, instead of using the HP market solely as a
"cash cow" to fund its efforts to penetrate other markets.
