The one thing that resonates here is that althought the software is free,
the support may, or may not, be there.

One of the things being done to rectify this is just what HP is doing --
taking in key portions of this type of software such as BIND/iX (DNS
Software) and Samba/iX (Resource sharing on Windows networks), and
supporting them within FOS. IBM, being on the Apache team, is assisting the
Apache team with "supporting" the IBM platforms with Apache, which means
that any IBM user under a support contract, can call in with support
questions to IBM, and get support.

Samba, for example (and from personal use), is based in Australia. The
latest version of Samba (1.9.18p10 and 2.0.0 alpha) have been here and in
port development for some time (basically, being redone). 1.9.18p10 is
being tested now -- but the fact that the core team is in Australia has no
meaning - I can discuss things with Andrew or Luke with E-Mail, and soon, if
we can get a key piece of software ported, we can submit the MPE code so
that it too, can be maintained there.

What's free for MPE, that's not included in FOS for 6.0? Quite a bit,
thanks to the two Marks and others. Sendmail is there, and soon, CVS could
be on the horizon. In the not too distant future, a unix-literate person
can sit down at a 3000, in the shell, and work on the 3000 as if they were
on a Unix system. Posix provides that functionality (Posix is not an
operating system - the OS is still MPE). It's nice to see the "open-ness"
come out.

Best Regards,
Joe
