Largely just terminology. The 'Base' is rarely used anymore and
referred to coaxial cable initially, 10Base5 being "ThickLAN" and
10Base2 being "ThinLAN". With the advent of 10BaseT (twisted pair
cable, following the brief life of EtherTwist, StarLan, and others).

With 100Mbps links, copper Category 5 cable is commonly referred to
as '100TX' while fiber links are '100FX'.

The newer Gigabit interfaces use 1000SX (short-haul, typically multimode
fiber) and 1000LX (long-haul, typically single mode fiber).
I *think* that 1000TX has been ratified by IEEE, finally, but I could
be wrong (gigabit over copper). It requires all 4 pairs of a Cat5
cable.
