LANcity Cable Modems
Rogers Cable in Canada uses both the Motorola and the LANCity modems. I have
a LANCity one at home but also run into inconsistent download times from the
same local sites (traceroutes appear identical). Since you can't purchase a
cable modem as of yet Rogers removed the rental charge. You might try the
same angle with your cable company. Here is the press release from Rogers

There are several vendors that product cable modems but virtually all seem
to sell only to the cable companies. One I have found is
http://www.e-tech.com/cab.html which is poised to sell around $300 USD see

Subject: Re: Cable Modems (Was ISDN modems)
I just moved into an area with cable modems last week and had the cable
modem installed the day before I moved in. The speed has been from a 33.6k
modem dial up, to totally amazing. I pulled down a 6 meg file in under a
minute, but the next day it took me 20 minutes to pull down a 10 meg file.
The cost with the modem rental is $45 per month, the modem rental is $15.
They will let you buy up to 3 ip addresses for you house for just $7.95 a
month each.
If there were any other choices than the $300 motorola cable modem, I would
buy it and get out of the rental, but so far I haven't found anything.
