I'd like to do "SETVAR <varname> <escapechar>" without explicitly using the
escape character.

I can do
:SETVAR ESC 'kapow'
where 'kapow' = our friend the escape character aka %033 aka 0x1b aka
ascii(27), but I need to do something like
:SETVAR ESC %033
and be able to retrieve it as a character.

The whole idea is to avoid explicit usage of the character in my command
file.
