Have another thought - what are you actually using as your keys?  If you
are tripping over values which tend to hash to the same addresses, you're
playing the old secondary game... which can make for a lot of overhead.
Might you alter your definition a bit to encourage better distribution of
master entries?  And looking down the line... if that IS the case, beware
the overhead of future deletes!
