I suggest you check out nagios to see if it will do what you want.

i suggest too that if you go down the nagios path, you become familiar with
'expect'.   keep in mind that if 'snmp' isn't a four-letter word in your
environment, the 3000 will respond to snmp queries -- including cpu load.

nagios is well-suited for grabbing a 'quick status' so if you can adapt
your thinking in that direction then i think you'll be pleased with the
results.           - d
