ok, [snip]
If you've got express 7 (or 3) installed as well, and not only the
powerpatch 7, (I assume you mean the subsys tape, there has been some
confusion about this lately and I still don't know exactly what what
means. But let's not start this thread up again) shouldn't that line
above read something like *** MPE/iX Mit C.55.07 ***, or something?

The story continues. On the same system as before:

/POSIX/LINK/perl/RCS 154 # head /SYS/PUB/HPSWINFO
*******************************************************************
** **
** *** MPE/iX Mit 5.5 C.55.03 *** **
** POWERPATCH C5506 P3 **
** WED, JUL 2, 1997, 1:30 PM **
** **
** LIST OF HEWLETT PACKARD COMMERCIAL SOFTWARE PRODUCTS **
** INTEGRATED FOR DATECODE : '3732' **
** **
*******************************************************************
/POSIX/LINK/perl/RCS 155 #

On the other hand, another system:

/POSIX/LINK/perl 182 # uname -a
MPE/iX HP937 C.55.00 C.05.08 SERIES 937LX
/POSIX/LINK/perl 183 # head /SYS/PUB/HPSWINFO

*******************************************************************
** **
** *** MPE/iX Mit 5.5 C.55.00 *** **
** POWERPATCH C5507 P5 **
** TUE, JUL 16, 1996, 1:27 PM **
** **
** LIST OF HEWLETT PACKARD COMMERCIAL SOFTWARE PRODUCTS **
** INTEGRATED FOR DATECODE : '3628' **
** **
*******************************************************************
/POSIX/LINK/perl 184 #

As you see, this last one has the same HPSWINFO as yours. Neither
system has your man page though :-(. How many systems do you have to
have to have one that has correct man pages, and how do you know which
one it is? In my case, none has a good tar man page. They're a mix of
factory delivered with C.55.03, later updated with powerpatch 6;
factory delivered with C.55.03 + powerpatch 6; updated from C.50.00 or
C.50.02 to C.55.00 with powerpatch 7 (not subsys 3 tape). The updates
from MPE 5.0 have been done using a cslt created from CDROM.

By the way, I found out the hard way that it is safer to change the
shell prompt so that it does not end with the ">" character. I once
accidently hit the enter key i.s.o. return and got "rewarded" with a
clobbered file. This is not a problem specific to MPE but more the
result of the enter key. Hence the "#" that gets interpreted as start
of comment.
