It really depends on your usage. For example; using a DDS-3 a while back
our backup (STORE.PUB.SYS) ran for 6 to 8 hours every night. We were
going thought DDS drives on a regular basis.

Third Party hardware support (Surety Systems) still fixed and/or
replaced them even though 6 to 8 hours a night was considered DDS abuse.
Now we use a DLT and it takes about 3 hours, without those regular
failures.

If you use the M.P.E. STORE command for your backup, and it's
unattended, and if you have too many mornings where you find your backup
is still waiting for a tape, then I could help you with an automated
backup attendant (Free of charge of course). He is on the job in the
form an M.P.E. Batchjob, that runs parallel to your backup job. When a
problem occurs related to the backup, he will send email/text msg to a
pager or mobile phone.

Good Morning (at least on the Left Coast) Gentle Listers:

Would anyone like to give me an idea of the expected service life of
these units?

We have two of the little devices and I'm beginning to get a tad
concerned with logged I/O errors (Log error=111) and backup failures.
They're at least (one anyway,i.e.) two years old.

Thanks for the bandwidth.
