The batch job doesn't have to be running for the console messages to be diverted. Many thanks to those who responded to my missing console message dilemma.
Easytime (which I had never heard of) was running in the background,
intercepting all console messages. After a bit of rummaging around, I
altered its configuration to show messages on the console as well as in
Easytime. Once I cycled the background job my alterations took effect.
Thanks again!
