Mark may wish to clarify, but there "may" be some release-specific items
at play here with the Gnu toolkit and add-ons. Mark is working on (and
I'm playing around with) a 5.5-specific build largely to support perl
but also involves some Gnu items for shared library support as on Unix.
This requires the use of shared globals/XL-dependencies in the
libraries. As such they will not work on 5.5. To my knowledge the
toolkit on jazz is still 5.0 based, but 5.5 is providing significant
advantages for further Gnu development we cannot ignore.

If you have 5.0, you can get Gnu gcc/g++ *if* you have the Posix
developer's kit (an add-on to C/iX). As of 5.5, the libraries supplied
in the developer's kit are supplied on FOS, so this is not a major issue
[IMHO] since the original question was for Gnu on a non-C/iX system
where neither build of perl would work.

The new 5.5 build under development moves the old posix RLs into shared
XLs, reducing sizes of object programs considerably and improving
performance. This includes a much more recent Gnu build version and
perl 5.003. If things go well, you can expect some significant
improvements in the coming months in this area.
