Regarding netrc: we use it to keep the user name and password out of the
calling job. We secure it to only allow the BAtch-only user id to only
be able to eXecute it, but since we use a file equation to point to the
file (which resides in a different group than the user's home group), we
don't call the actual file netrc. While it is not clear from the
documentation that this is legal, it does work.
