So, it sounds like you need to take your existing file, and convert it with
tobyte before the get.

Thanks for the reply. I had to do a ftp put from the Wintell server because
inbound
ftp is disabled. I tested the various methods (ascii, binary & tenex)of
transfer and
tenex moves the file perfectly. Our net admin will not open any of the
servers to
ftp. Is there a way to control the type of transfer in samba? Would
'translate' help
this. If so, how is it included in the smbclient command line. Also, the
file is
used by a mpe/cobol program.
