I did the same thing a few weeks ago. I was forced to do an emergency
install of a new disk in my 2 year old laptop and proceeded to load Windows
2000. Now, I did not perform the Wirt Wipe, since the disk was brand new.
I did, however, go to the Compaq web site and download the latest
enhancements and drivers for the Armada on Windows 2000. I had not done a
Windows 2000 install in a few years and being cocky as hell, did not read
the document thoughtfully posted by Compaq on how to install Windows 2000 on
the Armada E700. I figured I knew everything and simply installed the
enhancements and service packs in no particular order. In due time I was
rewarded with the dreaded BSOD and the system would not run for more than a
few minutes before succumbing to another BSOD.

I had just spent 5 hours moving to a new drive (most of the time was
formatting the 48GB drive and then restoring all the data from the backups
and other places. I was getting ready to do a Wirt Wipe when I decided to
boot Windows 2000 in repair mode. After Windows has replaced all the system
files, I dutifully followed, to the letter, the installation of the Compaq
enhancements and was rewarded with a very stable, high-performance system.
It is amazing how much garbage one can accumulate in a few years on a
laptop. Over time, the performance decreased slowly, so that when I was
forced to change the disk drive, the newly installed OS just caused the
system to run much faster than before. It helps to have a faster disk drive
also.

So, Richard, take a few minutes to peruse the Dell website and see if they
have documentation on how to do a proper install of Windows 2000 on your
laptop. I am totally unfamiliar with Dell or the Dell web site, but I hear
their support is very good so there must be some information for you. I
would help you, but I have no idea which Dell Laptop you have. When you
have the document and the programs/drivers you need, simply do a Windows
2000 repair.

Kind regards,

Denys. . .

I messed up my new laptop with Windows 2000 just Friday. Won't boot up
into the GUI, safe mode, vga mode, etc. don't work either. Just get
a blue screen, without a message at or anything. I messed it up trying
to install the docking drivers that were supposed to be on it already,
but it wouldn't come up on the port replicator, so I thought they needed
to be installed. It's a Dell latitude. I can get the command line prompt,
which is darn fast, too.:-) We have three others just like it and they
all worked fine when docked.

Maybe I'll just put Red Hat 7.2 on it. I was going to do that on my
desktop, but maybe this is a signal.
