When I first started researching the various wireless bar code terminals to
decide which could best meet the needs of a multi-campus environment, nobody
was using telnet - it was all proprietary..

Eventually all manufactures I am aware of came around to the telnet
solution.

Pre-telnet, LXE was the first manufacturer to offer the capability of
maintaining a session while handing off from one base transceiver to the
next. We bought LXE because that product line offered all conceivable
capabilities we would require building out a wireless terminal network to
support multiple organizations, including the in-house transportation
functions.

Since telnet, I do not know if this "handoff" feature is still feasible. I
believe the telnet session is between the RF base unit and the host, so it
might be lost when transitioning between bases.
