Well I looked in an old sales catalog that I have from 1995, and it
doesn't mention that the 939 can be multiply CPUS..It does say that the
959 and 969 can be..and that you can upgrade a 939 to one of these.

Well, look at MPE/iX 7.5 communicator (available at
http://www.docs.hp.com/en/30216-90336/30216-90336.pdf) page 83. It
lists all suported HPCPUNAME values. As you'll see, there are no
mentions there of a 939 with multiple cpus.
I'm not a HW person but I guess those K series systems all had same cpu
cage so you're "only a board swap" away from a bigger (and possibly
multi-cpu) system.
