What have I heard so far?:
1. The "908" must be a powerful machine.
2. Lots of memory.
3. Fully loaded with software.
4. Portable
So everyone wants a portable 918 at a 908 price! Dream on!
Note:
1. Portables are harder (more costly)to manufacture than tower units.
2. HP now has 12 or so orders for this high production
cost machine. Whoopee!
Look, I am not against the idea of a 908, but I don't see where
you/we have convinced HP that it can make any money,
or even break even, selling one.
Let's limit our request to HP with the goal of getting SOMETHING!
My proposal:
1. A developers' machine - call it a 908 of you want, but read on.
2. The hardware is a 918, with the usual developer's discount.
3. It is fully loaded, software wise, with limited (none?) software
support - maybe on a per call basis, but with updates on a media
cost only basis.
4. Software license is for only 4 users.
From my perspective SOFTWARE is really the important issue.
The initial cost is bad enough, but after the first year (warranty)
it really goes through the roof. On the other hand, the marginal
cost of software is minimal, so HP can't lose money giving the
developer software at reproduction costs.
The above doesn't do much for the non-developer, except that HP
could lower the 918 price by initiating a 4 user license tier.
In summary, I don't think we will get a better Hardware deal than
we have now, so let's concentrate on hardware.
