Yes, you can boot from the Symmetrix box.  I have had this configuration on
a 989 before and had no problems with it at all.  EMC will build the machine
and will deliver to the HP3000 whatever size drives you wish, I used 4gig
drives.  You will need to do a reload to move ldev1 and build the new system
volume set.  Don't forget to change the primary boot path from the PDC menu.
I even suffered a drive failure and the system did not notice.  I give them
an A+ on usability, probably a little lower on price.

If you own the existing drives, I would keep them and mount them as a
private volume for your personal play area.  If you don't need them and want
to, remove them.

We have recently purchased an EMC Symmetrix ( personal preference would have
been XP256 but I digress... :o) )   and I need to convert our data to the
EMC disk drives. My question is this... can the O/S (ldev 1) be transferred
to the EMC? We are using the system volume set so I don't have user volumes
to deal with. Since we are using the system volume set logic tells me that
the O/S would have to reside on the Sym(metrix). Should I keep ldev 1 or can
it be removed from the system? I have 3 drives in the cabinet now (ldevs 1,
2 and 3) and I cannot think of any reason to either keep or dispose of them.
