We had exactly the same problem when another device had the same IP address.
In our case there was an old PC assigned the same IP address. The PC was not
always turned on. If it was not connected, the printer worked fine. When it
was, the spool file just "disappeared". Pinging appeared to work fine since
the PC was answering the PING. Drove us insane trying to figure out what was
going on.

1) Find the MAC address on the printer.
2) On the HP3000 look at the IP mapping table: Run NETTOOL.NET.SYS
>>> NAMEADDR
>>> MAPPINGS
>>> MAPPING
3) In the MAPPING table:
Does the IP address appear more than once?
Does the IP address have the correct MAC address?

If the IP address appears more than once and/or the MAC address associated
with it is wrong, then you have another device with the same IP address
assigned.

Depending on the size of your network and/or how well your network
configuration documentation has been kept up, now may come the hard part.
Trying to find out what device has the other MAC address.

Thanks

you're certain about this ip address, right? btw, you can use the printer's
dns name
(if it has one) i like using the printer's name because printers have this
way of
moving around and changing addresses without you knowing about it....

this is an hp printer, right?

and this file exists, right?

was the printer spooled out while your were doing this work? if so, try
stopping the
spooler for this printer (it may take a bit of mucking as it appears
something is
waiting to print....)...count to 10 (why? it's good for your blood pressure
:-) and
then start the spooler.

i believe the 'rule' (probably john burke's rule :-) is to make sure
spooling is
stopped when changing npconfig. the system doesn't handle the change
dynamically.  by
having the spooling stopped, then changing npconfig, then restarting the
spooling --
the system will re-read npconfig and all is well. - d
