Sendmail relies heavily on having DNS i.e. RESLVCNF.NET.SYS setup properly
pointing to nameservers that can resolve pretty much any domain. So, Bind/iX
is not necessary if you already have DNS on your network.

Sendmail is dependant on syslog so you'll need it. Syslog is pretty robust,
you only have to worry about the space that the logfiles take up. I think
there's a utility that comes with Apache that can be cribbed to rotate the
logs automatically (via a scheduled job).

Sendmail is also a pain to setup - there are a lot of options. If you
already have an SMTP server that is connected to the internet, you could set
up Sendmail/iX to blindly forward all non-local outgoing mail to this server
and let *it* do all the work. In that case, it may not be necessary to have
RESLVCNF setup - but just have an entry in HOSTS.NET.SYS pointing at the
SMTP server.
