Just to add depth to the confusion, I tried this on Apache/1.2.3, creating
an index.html and index.back, and could not recreate this behavior. I tried
both upper and lower case. I could not get Apache to return either index to
IE 5! Perhaps this is because of the older version of Apache. ORA's "Apache:
The Definitive Guide" states that Apache should regard an index.html as the
default page for a URL that points to a directory. Whereas my ISP tells me

or IE and the WebSitePro/1.1h server are negotiating something for our

able to shed some light on these goings on, or provide more stringent
testing...

Please note that this explanation, now favored by Greg, Lars, and myself,
could still be wrong, but it is at least consistent with the evidence.
Nonetheless, a little bit of stringent testing could determine whether it is
absolutely true or not.
