Actually, I would think that this is possible. My area codes at work and
at home are about to change. The changes are geographic. AFAIK, so are
exchanges (the first three digits). So when 508-111-2222 changes to 978,
so will all the other 111s. Can any telecommunications gurus shed some
light on this?

I would think that the phone companies could make some money offering to
put us through after these area code changes, for a small fee, as they
offer to do with directory assistance...
