I, on the other hand, use it all the time ... including for access to
our HP 3000s.

On my PC, running Win 98, I run WRQ Reflection X. With X, I login
to an HP 9000 (running HP-UX 10.20 and the CDE windowing environment).

Then, my CDE session has a single-click access to 12 different workspaces.
I use one workspace for sessions connected to one HP 3000, another
worksapce for sessions connected to another HP 3000, one workspace for
a session connected to our Linux PC (where I run elm), etc.

CDE is great, since it's extremely easy to configure/expand the root
menu (when you click on the background) ... so my root menu gives me
a single click logon (and invocation of QEDIT) to all of our 3000s
and 9000s.

Sample from .dt/dtwmrc on the 9000:

Menu SSRootMenu
{
    "Workspace Menu" f.title

    "Lisa: Sieler" _S Alt<Key>S f.exec "$HOME/.sessions/lisa-sieler"

the above means I can press <alt>S to open a window to Lisa (an HP 3000)
and logon as stan.sieler and run QEDIT ... or I can select it from the
pop-up root menu.

    "Lisa: Samba" f.exec "$HOME/.sessions/lisa-samba"

the above means I can open a new window and logon to Lisa, into mgr.samba,
by selecting it from the pop-up root menu (i.e., no keyboard shortcut).

...

    no-label f.separator

    "tiktok: Lpstdev" f.exec "$HOME/.sessions/tiktok-lpstdev"
the above means I can open a new window and logon to tiktok (a 3000),
as mgr.lpstsdev, by selecting it from the pop-up root menu (i.e., no
keyboard shortcut).

    no-label f.separator

    "Local Window (oz)" f.exec "hpterm -ls -sl 600 -n oz_sieler -
title oz_sieler -geometry 132x50 &"

the above opens a new window (hpterm) with memory for 600 lines of memory, 132
columns wide, 50 lines long with a window title of "oz_sieler", and an
icon name (when the window is minimized) of the same. The window will
be interacting with the local 9000 (the one that my CDE is running on)

    no-label f.separator

    "Start xcal" f.exec "xcal -geometry +820+620 &"
"Start xClock" f.exec "xclock -digital &"
"Start xHPCalc" f.exec "xhpcalc -startAs PRO &"

The above allow me to run various X windows programs

Why do I "live" in X-Windows?

Two words: multi-processing and cut/paste

The ability to have 12 (or more, depending upon screen size/resolution)
workspaces is great. Yes, there is some PC software that tries to emulate
this concept, but I find it doesn't work as well as VUE/CDE. (Plus, with
a single click, I can minimize all my X windows and concentrate on
PC-based applications.)

You'll find that hpterm (on the 9000) is the world's worst HP terminal emulator
... it barely works well enough. But, it does run block mode and QEDIT, so I'm
happy with it. (Indeed, HP should be ashamed of it ... and ought to release
the code so someone could fix it for them.) (An alternative is the free
xhpterm from Telamon ... but I've not been able to switch to it for reasons
I don't recall. ftp.telamon.com/freevt3k)

Cut/copy/paste is MUCH easier with X Windows than it is with properly
configured terminal emulators. Why? You simply highlight a section with your
mouse and *it's copied* into the clipboard. You simply chord (click left/right
together) to paste. (Those actions are somewhat configurable, IIRC)
It's much more intuitive than higlighting and then doing silly mouse or
keyboard games to cut (even though recent versions of Reflection and QCTerm
have made this easier).
