Define "inexpensive".

At my last 3000 shop, we had Ipswich Software's "What's Up Gold" in place.
It handled the ping and other network service checks.

We talked about setting up SNMP queries to check other values. I'm pretty
sure you can query private volumes via SNMP.

If inexpensive means you can't spend money, but can spend time reinventing
the wheel, you can always "roll your own" scripting. The "gotcha" is other
points of failure, like power to the monitoring system, or the reliability
of reaching someone by dialing a cell phone.

I am surprised by how seldom I've seen or heard of someone coming up with a
robust enough scheme.
