Do you have a tape in the drive? If not, mount a scratch
tape and place the drive on-line. Sometimes backup products
will get 'hung' waiting on an interrupt from the tape
drive and my mounting a tape and placing it on-line, it
will get the hardware interrupt and return, completing the
abort....
