Funny I had just done this yesterday, to replace a Volume Set with
bigger drives.
Note #1:
Unless you have System Engineer utilities to copy a disk bit by bit
you're going to rebuild the whole Volume Set, not just one disk.
Note #2:
Sounds like your config is traditional and there are no mirrors or
arrays. The below is written with this in mind.
Note #3:
If the Volume Set isn't working now, steps 2.a and 8.a below won't work,
use steps 2.b. and 8.b. from an old Backup. If you did not have
DIRECTORY option on your old Backups you may lose ACCOUNT, GROUP and
USER information. C'est la vie.
Here is the PROCESS without details.
1. Get a Backup ready. (If a new one can't be made an old one will
have to do.)
2. Get a BULDJOB1 file handy for the Volume Set in question.
2.a. You can make it (or them) with the BULDACCT program. (You may
want to make sepearate BULDJOB1 files for each account on the Volume set
so you may end up renaming BULDJOB1 to NOT overwrite it.)
2.b. Alternately, you can use the directory option on your Backup tape.
(3rd party backups work also.)
3. Close the Volume Set with the VSCLOSE command. (Works only when no
one is accessing the Volume, you may have to shut down the system just
to accomplish this. I hate that but sometimes it is the only way.)
4. Scratch the Volume Set drives with VOLUTIL.
5. Replace the drive. (You may have to scratch that one too.)
5.a. If they are on NIKE arrays, disable or remove any HOT SPARES
first. (Sounds like this is not your config but doing this is kinda
funny and mandatory at the same time.)
6. Use NEWSET with VOLUTIL to make a new Master Volume
7. Use NEWVOL with VOLUTIL to add more drives (the old ones and the new
one.)
8. Re-Create the Directory on the Rebuilt set.
8.a. Stream the BULDJOB1 file.
8.b. Alternatively, use the Directory option on a RESTORE tape. (3rd
party backups work also.)
9. Restore the files from tape to the newly rebuilt Volume Set.
