I use SSH daily to my Linux boxes and am very happy with it.  I don't know
how difficult porting SSH to the 3000 would be, but before you invest that
time, you might want to have a quick word with Minisoft about options for
secure connections to a 3000.  They've been working on some such and their
prices tend to be quite reasonable.
