Also check that the number of data bits, start/stop bits and parity
are the same for the system and the printer.  I've seen multiple cases where
one had been set for odd and another for even parity or no parity...  and
 
 Xoff=#17=$11=00010001(even parity)=10010001(odd parity)
 Xon =#19=$13=10010011(even parity)=00010011(odd parity)
 
if your printer sends Xoff w/ parity bit and 3000 uses 8 bits no parity...
you see, Xoff would be seen as char(91) i.e. "["... likewise, an Xon sent
with even parity to a recepient w/ no parity would yield to chr(93) or "]".
