I suppose this applies to emailing too ?

Sending emails direct from our HP (using the mail program from Telamon /
Vytek) seems to take 2 or 3 times longer than sending a similar email from a
PC out thru the same internet connection to the same isp. (Our ftp
transmissions over the same line all seem to go fast, but the files are
really, really small).

Pretty much everything here speed-senses, and we still have some old 10-only
stuff, so I am not eager to mess with it. The lines from the main switch to
the HP and the cable/dsl router are running at 100. The line from the router
to the dsl-modem is 10.

I ask only out of curiosity. We are far from having a real problem - the
email send jobs live in a separate jobq, and it doesn't matter much whether a
job takes 20 seconds or 60.

FTP

We experienced some problems with file transmittal speed when we were
adding hardware and software to the fire wall and changing the LAN
servers.

1. Do not allow any speed sensing on any of your hardware or software.
2. Check for dumb hubs, switches or NIC cards in servers that can sense
either 10 or 100 meg. Set your speed on all your software (fire walls,
servers) and do not sense the speed.
3. Set your HP 3000 speed, do not speed sense.
4. Make sure they are all set to the same speed, generally 100 meg.

As soon as you sense speed it will slow you down.

Someone even put a dumb switch between the firewall and the pipe to the
internet. The switch did sensing and we could not set the speed on this
low cost device. We got incredible speed when we removed this device.

Subject: [HP3000-L] FTP from HP3000 to external FTP servers.

We are experiencing performance problems when we FTP some large files
from our HP3000s to a couple of external FTP servers (via our office
firewalls).

My investigations reveal :

1) We can FTP the file from the HP3000 to an internal FTP server (inside
our network) at a decent speed
2) We can also FTP the file from our PCs to the external FTP server
using Reflections FTP client at the same speed
3) And we can read the file from the External FTP server to our HP at
roughly the same speed.

So the only problem appears to be when we PUT the file from the HP3000
to the external FTP server. I also believe the problem only occurs on
large files, but I can't yet quantify what I mean by "large".

For info, the file is being transferred as Binary.

Any suggestions dear listers ?

Here's a sample of the FTP script being us(suitably censored)

EXITONERROR
OPEN abc.fred.net
USER user****** pass**********
TIMEOUT 30
BINARY
put TEMPJOB Tempfile.txt
DEL Tempfile.txt
EXIT
