Sendmail on Unix has a "-d" switch to enable debugging, that hopefully works
on MPE as well. You can optionally add numeric qualifiers to specify the
category and level of detail of messages you want to see, e.g.
   -d0.1   Print version information
   -d0.4   Our name and aliases
   -d0.22 Show uname failure
    ....
   -d9.3   Show raw RFC1413 reply
   -9.10   Show raw RFC1413 query being sent
....etc...

All explained in gory detail in chaper 37 of the O'Reilly Sendmail book.
