Tom is right, of course. The code is right. The text is wrong.
I keyed in the Engineering Note (A3043325) this morning from a hard copy I
had in my files from ten years ago, and the typo was in the original. I
would be very surprised if anyone has corrected it, if indeed the EN still
exists anywhere.
Funny, I made this same mistake in a posting earlier this year, and now
here's proof I did it [at least] once in 1993 as well. HP COBOL only has
the two pseudo-intrinsics. You'd think I could keep them straight. :-)
A better way to do it now would be to use the LENGTH function instead of
.LEN., but at the time I wanted a version that would work with both the CM
aand NM versions of the compiler.
