I just went through the same rigamarole this last winter. Our building
has 4 humongous diesels/generators, blah, blah, blah. I wondered
why I had to buy a UPS for my 928.

I bought one - the 1.3 kva one. (er, rather the company did)

(1) HP recommended it. Would NOT support problems w/o it.
Our own tech support people also recommend it.
(2) The zillion $$ UPS for this building always makes lights
blink and PCs reboot when we have to switch to backup power.
(3) Several times a year the power shuts down anyway.
(4) They still have planned building outages.
(5) HP specd out this UPS to last for 20-30 minutes MAX.
I tested it and it lasted for 2 hrs 54 minutes.
(6) The HP UPS sends signals to MPE to tell status of power.
Your building UPS wont do that. (Apparently they message also go to
the system log file - which could be monitored by a user program.)
(7) I heard that UPS for HPUX sends a signal to HPUX to shut down
the system. Currently, this is not supported by HP for MPEiX
    Wierd, huh? Anyway, HP SHOULD:
Permit a config like the following:
      (a) SM specifies how long a graceful shutdown takes for the machine;
      (b) SM specifies a batch job that would launch and implement the
shutdown. Both of these configed in SLT??!!
      (c) Then during a power fail, the UPS would signal MPEiX to commence
shutdown -- time based on how quickly the battery is draining
and how long a shutdown takes.
I have no idea why HP doesn't permit this now. It seems like they are
      98% there.

Regardless of what isnt there yet, I still am glad I got it. The answer is
pretty simple to me: You want it to stop running [ with / without ] XM being

written to disc?

Their response is weird. Perhaps your system has such a big power drain
(memory, disc drives, etc, etc.)
that the UPS doesn't have enough poop for a 15 min failure???
